4-WHEELIN' & OTHER OFF-ROAD MOTORSPORTS (including trucks, SUVs, ATVs and dirtbikes) are exhilerating ways to spark adrenaline. The Pocatello and Southeast Idaho region has a lot to offer for all these activities. I'd recommend starting at the Blue Ribbon Coalition website for more information on the trails, ethics and environmental issues surrounding these sports.

BOATING - from kayaking to canoeing, white water rafting, drift boating, powerboating, wind surfing and sailing, Southeast Idaho provides an outlet for all. There's Bear Lake (more info at Bearlake.org), Blackfoot Reservoir, Palisades Reservoir (more from the US Forest Service), Portneuf River, Snake River, Teton River and more from the Idaho State Parks and Recreation website.

CLIMBING - in Pocatello?! Yes! There are some great climbing challenges to "face" in the area. For more information, start with The ISU Outdoor Center. Also, there's an indoor climbing wall, one of the largest of it's kind at ISU - check it out at http://www.isu.edu/camprec/facilities/wall.html.

It's not
as crazy as it looks!
CAMPING is easy to find around Pocatello and Southeast Idaho. Just 15 minutes to a half-hour ride and your smack dab in the middle of some great camping in the beautiful mountains surrounding our great town. There's camping for the backpacker, drive up, RV's and everything in between. You can find more information at the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) website and The Spirit of Pocatello website. There's some great camps for kids like Camp Taylor too.

CROSS COUNTRY AND NORDIC SKIING - in Pocatello and the surrounding area is unparalleled. With an amazing network of trails, both groomed and natural, throughout the surrounding mountains you'll enjoy the peace and serenity that is only known to those of us who venture deeply... or not. Fortunately for us in Pocatello, just a short hike in will give you that deep venture feeling. The wilderness is close by in these parts. For more information and updates on trail conditions and grooming reports, check out the Pocatello Cross-Country Ski Foundation website. Also, the ISU Outdoor website has a lot information too. More good trail maps can be found on Southeast Idaho's Lodging & Recreation Guide website.

FISHING - as is the case throughout Idaho, fishing in this region is excellent! Fly fishing or spinners, veterans and beginers, there's an eager trout or whitefish just waiting for you. MAX Pocatello has some good information and so does Fishing Southeast Idaho.com. Of course there's always lots of great information on the Idaho Fish and Game website.
HIKING - Like all outdoor sports in this region, Pocatello offers greatness in hiking too. For some great hikes and maps, check out the following links: Trails.com, Gorp, and BLM. Also, check out the ISU Outdoor Adventure Center or Idaho - Adventures in Living for more information.

HORSE BACK RIDING - As the West was traveled by our ancestors, Pocatello's interest in horse back riding has not diminished. Seems everywhere you go in the back country trail system, you run accross a group of smiling riders. Check out GoIdaho.com, HorseScapes.com or Yahoo, Also, check out the ISU Outdoor Adventure Center or Idaho - Adventures in Living for more information.

MOTORCYCLING - As one of my passions since my early college days, I've kept it between the ditches in all of the contiguous United States! Long distance motorcycle touring is one of my favorite solo adventures. On a local level Pocatello offers a lot great twisty pavement through the countryside. For a couple excellent local rides, try heading up through Mink Creek and just keep on going, or try winding down to Inkom on Buckskin Road.

The bike
is actually full size - I'm
huge!
MOUNTAIN BIKING - As one of our favorite sports, Pocatello is host to an impressive network of mountain bike trails! Did you know that there's one trail that you can take all the way around Pocatello? When my wife and I moved here, we knew there was some pretty good mountain biking in the area, but we had no idea how diverse, challenging and plentiful it really was.
Great single
track in Mink Creek!
Wheelies
keep Peter young!
ROAD BIKING - Gotta admit, I'm no "Roadie," but I enjoy a highspeed adventure on the asphalt once in a while. There do seem to be a lot of "Rodies" around here though... we're certainly not lacking for good pavement with scenic views and lots of twists and turns! Here are some good links to road bike enthusiats, clubs, races and bike retailers in our area:
Idaho Cycling Enthusiasts (LAB), Pocatello, ID www.isu.edu/~cepeandr/ice.htm
Lost River Cycling, Boise (USCF/NORBA) - 100-member family-oriented club organizes road and mountain biking rides and races, instruction and trail maintenence. lrc_board@lycos.com
Idaho State University Mt. Bike Club, Pocatello - student/faculty only, trail maintenance, racing, weekend trips. www.isu.edu/mtbike
Team Dobbiaco - 70-member family-oriented road & mountain biking club offers recreational, racing and training rides and clinics. www.teamdobbiaco.com
RUNNING - I like to run, but it hurts my knee. An ACL injury from ski wreck a few years back took care of that. I'm starting to run a bit with my wife - she's the running enthusiast. Anyway, here's some good information about running in the Pocatello area:
SKATE & FREESTYLE PARK - these days I leave the skating to the daring young athletes with more flexible bones. Here's a few links to the Pocatello Skate Park and some long boarding opportunities in the area.
SKIING - ALPINE, A/T, TELEMARK - been doin' this since I was 3 years old - umm, that'd be well over 3 decades now! It's as much of a rush as you make it. Feel free, ski!
A little
backcountry adventure
SNOWMOBILING - visit Southeast Idaho.org for some great snowmobiling maps and information. Pocatello and Southeast Idaho offer some of the greatest snowmobiling around!.
TRAIL MAPS of the Portneuf Area - There are many sources for trail maps for all sports. Generally it's best to consult local experts at sporting goods shops, but there are a few good online resources too.
